Web Development Profile
Mission Community Skills Centre
The Challenge
To create a comprehensive site detailing several program categories
and their materials. Users of the site ranged from novice to experienced.
The site needed to match graphically with a print publication released
at the same time as the site. Deadline for the site was 6 weeks.
The Proposal
The web site proves MCSC is on the leading edge of technology by
providing navigation intuitiveness and including advanced features
such as dynamic rollover images, link highlighting, dynamic pages
and a site-wide search.
The site features topic areas, such as Contact Information, Press
Releases, and the Community Events Calendar. The site promotes the
Skills Centre as an institute providing advanced technological training
while being closely tied to the community. The community involvement
encouraged by the site encourages new ideas in areas where the Mission
Community Skills Centre can set their focus for new program development.
The Development
Developing the site architecture can be difficult at the best of
times, and this site proved to be a challenge. With so much overlapping
content it was easy to turn it into a surfer's nightmare of confusing
links. The categories were already predefined according to a matching
brochure publication. Taming all the content into categories was
achieved by incorporating a second navigation tablet on the
right of the window to help users define which page they were viewing
and to help move about within each category.
JavaScript was used extensively throughout the site to generate
current dates, rollover images, and manage the on-line event calendar.
In all the entire site comprises of over 175 HTML files and 155
images. Development of the site was completed on schedule to meet
the release of the print publication for the MCSC Spring 1999 advertising
campaign.
