Canadian Handcrafted Lamps
The Challenge
The client approached FOGdesigns.com with the desire to sell their array
of over 2800 lamps through a e-commerce site to a North American market.
The site needed to appeal to both do-it-yourself home designers and lighting
professionals.
The Proposal
Providing a welcoming site with an appealing design while keeping the
navigation structure simple was the goal of the site. Our proposal involved
setting up a two market centers on the site, the Showroom and Workshop.
To allow the user to enjoy the creation of a masterpiece the workshop
allows the user to build their own lamp. The e-commerce solution allows
for simple on-line ordering and real-time credit card processing.
The Development
Using 4 of their most common sizes of table lamps and 4 sizes of hanging
lamps, the workshop was developed into a three stage interactive process.

First choosing a size and colour of lamp, the user proceeds to the motif
selection page where over 175 motifs are available for melding into the
stained glass shades. The lamp images are updated on the fly with each
selection. The final page of the workshop displays the lamp and detailed
specifications.
Server side page generation was implemented with Microsoft's Active Server
Page (ASP) technology and client side page displays were handled by JavaScript.
This allows a very flexible environment for page generation and allows
pages to be generated quickly. Server ASP scripts also handle the shopping
cart, a superior method to the commonly used cookie method on other sites.
